Oregon Translation Case Study: Albina Early Head Start Program

Project: Albina Early Head Start Program serves the needs of infants and toddlers in Portland, Oregon. Because the program serves low-income families communicating in several languages, program leaders opted to bridge a communications gap by providing a Spanish version of their Parent Handbook. Spanish is the first in a series of translations for Albina Early Head Start.

Process: Oregon Translation translated a 90-page Parent Handbook from English into Spanish. Oftentimes, non-profit organizations and agricultural firms find themselves in a delicate financial tug-of-war between paying for professional work and squeaking by.

At first, Albina Early Head Start asked Oregon Translation to only translate one-third of the book. Head Start had previously translated the remainder using free services. Upon reviewing that translation, Oregon Translation politely notified Head Start that the quality of that free translation was inaccurate to the extent that the only honest advice was to have professional translators redo the work. Albina Early Head Start swiftly and heartily agreed to have Oregon Translation continue the work we had already begun and translate the entire 90-page handbook.

Results: With this parent handbook, the goal was to convey Head Start’s message in an effective and coherent manner that would draw in their target audience with a clear understanding of how to interact with the school. Oregon Translation was willing to negotiate within budget constraints to produce a clear and appealing handbook, enabling Head Start to communicate effectively with parents, rather than create an audience with vague misconceptions (some of which might be damaging to Head Start’s image).

There are good and effective ways to use professional translators without it costing too much. If budget is a huge concern, then let's talk openly about how to align Oregon Translation’s services with your needs.

Quote: “Oregon Translation volunteered a candid assessment of our existing translation with clear examples of necessary improvements. The fresh translation they have produced was a remarkable improvement! We look forward to working with Oregon Translation on future endeavors.”
