Translation FAQ

"The quality of your translation is impressive."
- Zoe Murillo, Translation Project Manager, CTS Language Link

I need a birth certificate translated. How much does it cost and how long will it take?

Our minimum fee for a 1-Step Translation is $95.00, which covers translation only for up to 300 words (usually 1-2 pages) and very basic formatting. We add $25.00 per certificate of accuracy, when requested. This 1-Step Translation process takes 2-3 business days, depending on scheduling.

If you wish to include editing by a second translator, fancy formatting, or other features, we can provide a custom estimate of the time and cost for these additional services.

For vital records, the question becomes whether you need a "certified translation." Oftentimes, immigrations services and courts require translations to be certified; occasionally financial institutions and schools also require certification. The real answer in your case depends on the purpose for which you intend the translation and the instructions you may have been given by the requesting authorities. We need to know the specific country and instructions from the requesting authority, so that we can customize our procedure for the destination country involved.

Certifying a translation entails having the translator prepare and sign a sworn statement that they are a professional, qualified translator of that language and that the translation produced is a true and accurate rendering of the original. The translator then attaches this certificate to the translation and the original and signs before a notary. The notary also signs and stamps the Translator's Certificate of Accuracy.

The Translator's Certificate ONLY attests to the accuracy of the translation against document you gave us to translate. Therefore, we will need to borrow the original birth certificate temporarily for this procedure. Scans, facsimiles, and photocopies often omit watermarks, blue ink, and stamps on the reverse side that must be included in the translation. Upon completion, we deliver the original, signed set back to you.

By law, we cannot authenticate the accuracy of your original document. We cannot by law make certified copies of vital records. If you would like multiple copies of the certified translation, you may wish to provide us with the equivalent number of certified originals from the issuing Vital Records office for us to attach as a set.

Apostilles and International Purposes
If you are presenting your US birth certificate to another country, you must obtain an apostille from the state where you were born to authenticate the original English US birth certificate. The Oregon Secretary of State offers a lot of information on this topic here www.filinginoregon.com. After acquiring the apostille, you can send us the original with the apostille at which point we can provide the translation and our translator's certificate of accuracy. After translation, you will need to obtain a second apostille for our notary's certificate from the Oregon Secretary of State. Oregon Translation cannot obtain these apostilles for you. Be sure to check the requirements for the foreign government to which you will present your documentation first.

Finally, certain governments only accept certified translations from special translators called "sworn translators" or "certified translators." Unfortunately, Oregon Translation does not offer this service. These governments include France, Spain, Germany, and Brazil. Contact the respective embassy for more information on the issue of "certified translators."
