How long does it take to translate a document?
This largely depends on the subject matter addressed in the document and the actual services requested.
As a rule of thumb for general texts:
Translators commonly translate an average of 2000-3000 words per day.
Editors can review 6000-8000 words per day.
If a project contains 10,000 words and involves the standard translation + editing, you should plan for the project to take a week. It may take more or less time depending on scheduling and how complex your document is. Of course, Oregon Translation can and does accommodate requests for rush translation jobs whenever possible using team methodologies.
Documents that involve a lot of technical or industry-specific wording (e.g., construction specifications, clinical trials,
computer networking, patents, or court rulings) usually take a little
longer because the translator and editor take due care to research and cross-check specific terminology and jargon. Marketing brochures also take longer to translate because the translation team does much more than straightforward translation; they attempt to adapt your marketing text to the culture of the target audience.
By simply viewing the text you would like translated, we can quickly determine how much time your project should take. This is why we request (pretty please) for you to upload your files (or an extract thereof) when submitting a quote request to Oregon Translation.
Furthermore, if your project involves some measure of graphic design (such as InDesign or Quark files), we need to schedule in time for the graphic designer to flow the translation into the template (or to create a new template). The translator also performs a final proof before we deliver the completed work to you, so that you are assured of a high quality product.
